How do you usually conduct a health insurance comparison? Do you only look to compare health insurance policies? If so, you may want to look more closely at the health funds themselves too. Many health funds have features that you may find useful for managing your health. Here, we look at Health Partners.
Basic health fund information
Health Partners has been around since 1937. Back then, they were known as the South Australian Public Service Association Hospital Fund. These days, they are the biggest health fund in South Australia. They are a not-for-profit health fund.
Health Partners has agreements with hospitals and extras providers. Members can use hospitals anywhere in Australia.
They also have a pharmacy network across Adelaide. The benefits of this are offered to all members with Extras cover. This includes set fees for PBS medicines not already subsidised. Members can also get discounts on non-prescription items. This includes pain relief and supplements.
They also have Dental and Optical centres. Members can get discounts by using these. Would you prefer to use your own dentist? You can do this too.
Types of cover
Health Partners offer hospital, extras and combined cover.
Hospital cover. There are three options here. Bronze Hospital is the most basic. This covers some in-hospital services. Health Management Programs are also included. These are for Coronary Artery Disease, bone health and type 2 diabetes. As a basic level of hospital cover, there are exclusions. Silver Hospital is more comprehensive. This option also includes the Newborn Support Program. This support extends through pregnancy and your baby’s first year. Full ambulance cover is also a feature. A few restrictions still apply. Gold Hospital offers the broadest cover. Chronic Condition Management support is an additional feature of this option.
Extras cover. There are three main options here. Bronze Extras covers some popular extras. This includes general dental, optical, physio, pharmacy and ambulance. Silver Extras is less restrictive. Some popular extras are still not included though. Gold Extras has no restrictions. Natural Plus can be added as an optional extra. This includes 14 natural therapies. Do you live in country SA or interstate? National Extras is aimed at you. It allows members to get higher benefits at providers outside of Adelaide.
Hospital and extras cover. Bronze Plus includes basic hospital and extras cover.
Firstly, you will need to fill in a Member Claim Form. These can be delivered by post or in person. You may not need to send a claim form. Is your doctor part of the Access Gap scheme? If so, they will usually bill Health Partners directly. Some doctors will bill you instead though.
Members can get discounts on a range of health and leisure products. Members also receive Your Health magazine three times per year. This includes special benefits and offers.
Health Partners are based in Adelaide. Their Dental and Optical centres are also in or around Adelaide. This is also the case for participating pharmacies. What if you are not based in South Australia? Members are based across Australia.
