Westfund Health

Westfund Health have been around since 1929 and are committed to providing value and high quality cover at competitive rates. In the 1950s, they were known as the Western District Mine Workers Medical Benefits Fund. They are a not for profit health fund.

Hospital Cover

Platinum Hospital covers members in public hospitals and most private hospitals. It is comprehensive cover and there are no notable exclusions, although psychiatric benefits are restricted.

Platinum Hospital 500 is comprehensive hospital-only cover and has no exclusions. Psychiatric benefits are restricted. It includes a $500 excess to keep premiums down.

Extras Cover

Gold Extras is the most basic option for extras-only cover. It includes ambulance, general dental, major dental, orthodontics, optical, physio, chiro and osteo, complementary therapies and healthier living benefits. There are no annual or lifetime limits on general dental.

Platinum Extras is the broadest option for extras-only cover and includes ambulance, general dental (with no limits), major dental, specialist dentistry, orthodontics, optical, chiro, physio, complementary therapies and prescriptions. The annual limits are slightly more generous here compared to Gold Extras.

Combined Cover

Essential is the least comprehensive of Westfund’s Hospital and Extras cover and the Hospital component only covers public hospital treatments. Gastric banding and dialysis are excluded on this policy. For Extras, it includes general dental, major dental, orthodontics, optical physio, chiro and osteo, prescriptions, prevention and health management, medically recommended aids and complementary therapies.

Essential Plus is similar to Essential and is limited to public hospital treatment only. For Extras, it has slightly more generous limits than Essential.

Value 4U is aimed at singles and couples, and restricts palliative care, psychiatric and rehabilitation services. Cardiology, obstetrics, assisted reproductive and dialysis services are excluded. In terms of Extras cover, it features popular services such as general dental, physio, chiro and osteo, and complementary therapies.

Ultimate Value excludes obstetrics, assisted reproductive services, age related services such as joint replacements and eye procedures and some cardiology procedures. Psychiatric and rehabilitation services are restricted. For Extras, it includes general dental, physio, chiro and osteo, prevention and health management, medically recommended aids and complementary therapies.

Value First is a relatively basic hospital and extras policy aimed at younger people. For hospital cover, it has an optional $250 excess to reduce premiums and excludes joint replacements, cataract surgery, some cardiology services, obesity surgery, dialysis, obstetrics and assisted reproductive services, and restricts psychiatric and rehab services. It includes general dental, specialist dentistry, optical, prevention and health management  and complementary therapies extras services.

Max Value has the same restrictions and exclusions as Value First cover and also has a $250 excess to keep premiums down. It includes general dental (with no limits), major dental, orthodontics, optical, chiro, physio, complementary therapies, prevention and health management, medically recommended aids and prescriptions.

Esteem is aimed at singles and couples aged 65+ and therefore excludes obstetrics, assisted reproductive services that are no longer relevant at this stage of life. Psychiatric, sterilisation and obesity surgery are restricted. For Extras, it includes dental, optical, physio, chiro and osteo, prescriptions, prevention and health management, medically recommend aids and complementary therapies.

Silver is a mid level hospital and extras policy. For hospital cover, it excludes cataract surgery, joint replacements, assisted reproductive services and obesity surgery and restricts psychiatric services. It has a $250 excess to keep premiums down. It includes general dental, specialist dentistry, optical, complementary therapies, prevention and health management medically recommended aids and prescriptions.

Sterling Silver is a mid level hospital and extras policy. It has the same hospital exclusions and restrictions as Silver cover, and a $250 excess to keep premiums down. It includes general dental (with no limits), major dental, orthodontics, optical, chiro, physio, complementary therapies, prevention and health management, medically recommended aids and prescriptions.

Gold is a comprehensive hospital and extras policy. It has no notable hospital exclusions except for cosmetic surgery but does restrict psychiatric benefits. It has no annual or lifetime limits on general dental and also includes major dental, orthodontics, optical, chiro, physio, complementary therapies, prevention and health management and prescriptions.

Platinum is a top level hospital and extras policy. It has no notable exclusions for hospital cover other than cosmetic surgery and no restrictions. For Extras, it includes general dental, major dental, orthodontics, optical, physio, chiro and osteo, complementary therapies, prevention and health management, medically recommended aids and prescriptions. In terms of annual limits, it is a bit more generous than Gold and has the highest limits for Extras.

Platinum Extended is essentially the same as Platinum but includes the ability to cover adult children aged 21-25 as well.

Most extras claims can be processed on-the-spot by swiping a Westfund Health membership card. Claims can also be made by mailing or faxing completed claim forms.

For online claims, members should send receipts via email, fax or post after lodging the claim in the Members Area.

Member advantages accumulate over time, depending on how long members have been with Westfund Health.

Westfund Health is based in Lithgow in NSW and have branches in both NSW and QLD. They have Dental Care centres in Lithgow (NSW) and Mackay (QLD), and Eye Care centres in Lithgow, Dubbo (NSW), Orange (NSW), Mackay and Rockhampton (QLD).

Don’t worry if you are not based in NSW though – their members are based throughout Australia.
