How to Get the Most From Your Health Fund

Health funds

Did you know that many health funds will reward you for being a member? Private health funds often offer reward programs, discounts and other bonuses to get you on board and keep you as a member. While this should never be your main goal in a health insurance comparison, these type of rewards can be very useful to add to your cover. Here are some of the rewards often available from health funds.

Broader health cover

Being a member of some health funds may give you advantages beyond your policy. This may include support to improve your lifestyle or manage certain conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. Some health funds may reward you for losing weight or getting fitter as part of their member support package. This may be personalised to you to help you get the most from your membership.

Another possibility is getting benefits towards health checks. This may include mammograms and cervical screening. Outpatient services are not covered by hospital insurance, so this is a great way to reduce out-of-pocket costs and stay healthy.

Member reward programs

Some health funds have reward programs to entice you to sign up with them. This may include schemes to reduce your out-of-pocket costs. It may mean that you would have to use specific providers to qualify, for example being treated by one of the health fund’s participating dentists.

You may be offered a chance to earn higher benefits for continuing your membership, especially on extras cover. This is another way to reduce your out-of-pocket expenses.

Health funds may also waive the excess for same-day hospital admissions. This may also be the case for admissions due to accidents.

Member discounts

Many health funds will offer you discounts on premiums as a sign-up bonus. Beyond this, they may also provide discounts on certain products or services bought through their partners.

As you might expect, these are usually focused on health, fitness and lifestyle, such as discounts on fitness equipment, gym memberships and other health-related items. This is a great bonus if you were already planning to get these as it will obviously save you some money on your purchases. With some health funds, entertainment discounts may also be on offer, such as discounts on movie tickets, for example.

Member bonuses

Are you happy with your health fund? You may be able to get referral rewards for encouraging family and friends to join. There may be restrictions as to which type of policy they need to sign up for before you can get rewards for this.

Summing things up

Your priority should always be to find the best health insurance for your needs. By all means, check out the member rewards if you cannot decide between health funds. However, ensure that the policy is well-suited to your requirements before you sign up.
