Where's your health insurance card?

Where Do You Keep Yours?

Let’s take stock of your situation right now.  Where is your health insurance card or other proof of insurance?  Is it in your wallet or jacket right now, so that you will have it with you at all times?

If you have private health insurance, your insurer may provide you with a card  that shows your policy number and other details of your health insurance, along with your name and other information.  This is the proof of your health insurance, and taking it with you when you obtain health care helps to ensure problem-free billing and reimbursements.

Ensure that your card is with you at all times.  Perhaps you could keep it in the same place as your driver’s license, car insurance details, and other important cards.  Ideally you should carry it with you, and not leave it in your car, your office or your filing at home.

Note that you should receive your proof of insurance soon after you purchase private health insurance.  If you don’t get it within good time, check with your health insurance company, as the card may have got lost on its way to you.  Also, you might consider printing off or writing down all the appropriate health insurance policy information you might need as a temporary measure, so that you can carry this with you until your card arrives.

Expect the Unexpected

If you aren’t carrying your proof of health insurance with you, you may run into some problems when you obtain health care. The most common issue arises when a patient visits the doctor but doesn’t know their health insurance details.  If the doctor’s office does not have your up-to-date health insurance information, they will not be able to bill your insurer properly.  This might mean that you have to pay the upfront costs of your consultation or treatment, and then wait for a reimbursement from your insurer – which might not be immediate.

Without your card, you also might not have your health insurer’s contact information to hand; also, when you call them, you might not know your policy number and other details your insurer uses to identify your health insurance records.  Thus, if you need immediate health care and you don’t have your proof of insurance, you may have trouble getting help from your insurer when you need to access nearby health care facilities in a hurry.

Overview

Not taking your proof of insurance with you to a healthcare provider may cause some administrative problems.  Not having your insurance card when you’re out and about may also cause problems if ever you need urgent health care.  After you compare private health insurance and purchase a policy, it is important to make sure you receive your proof of insurance and keep it somewhere sensible.
