Why private health insurance is a problem for overseas residents in Australia

To get a temporary student visa you need an Overseas Students Health Cover (OSHC) policy. This generally includes hospital care, ambulance cover and limited pharmaceuticals.

Most temporary working visas – including subclass 482 and 485 – need you to have Overseas Visitors Health Cover (OVHC). This includes hospital care with the option to add extras such as dental, optometry and physiotherapy.

But OSHC and OVHC policies tend to vary between health insurance providers. Some plans may have lower or no benefits for some treatments, and some policies may not cover pre-existing illnesses or impose long waiting periods.

Most OSHC and OVHC policies only provide limited cover for pharmaceuticals and may not cover high-cost medications such as chemotherapy drugs.

If you’ve just taken out the cheapest policy, you could pay later if you need treatment.

It’s vital for visa holders to understand what their health insurance excludes and how that affects them. A quick review should show if you need a better health plan.

The good news is Health Insurance Comparison’s experts can quickly help you find the best health insurance deal for you from our panel of trusted insurers. We’ll take care of the process from start to finish, including all the paperwork, so you can get on with enjoying the Australian lifestyle.
