Need Eye Surgery? Compare Health Cover First!

Brian | Jan 13, 2012 | 0 comments

You might come to learn that eye surgery is recommended for an illness or injury you’ve suffered.  However, what about the costs associated with the procedure?  Compare health cover to find out what fees your current private health insurance policy, or any new policy you choose, will take care of.

Can You Get Eye Surgery Coverage?

This is the million dollar question.  It may be difficult to find a private health insurance policy that offers coverage for eye surgery without too many limitations.

Many private health funds typically cover eye surgery only in certain circumstances.  Examples of situations in which eye surgery may be covered include:

  • surgery to correct an injury or a previous surgery
  • surgery for a patient with severe refractive errors
  • surgery for those who cannot wear glasses or contacts due to other physical limitations

From your current private health cover to any prospective future policy, make sure you understand your coverage.  This is one area of health insurance where the treatments and surgeries covered may vary between policies.

Your Health Insurance Comparison

You should certainly investigate health insurance policies that may offer you the coverage you need for an eye surgery procedure. Begin with your current private health insurance policy (if you have one).  Look through the terms of your policy to see if any types of eye surgery are listed as covered, and whether any are specifically excluded.  If you have any questions, contact your health insurance company to clarify matters.

You can then compare health cover in as much detail as necessary.  Compare health insurance quotes online, over the telephone, or face-to-face from local insurers.  Try to read a full copy of the policy before making any decisions, and look at how each of your candidate policies treats the subject of eye surgery.  Perhaps you will find one that fits your needs well enough, though this may mean that you need to make arrangements to have the policy’s standard coverage supplemented with added or extended cover for eye health.

Before You Purchase Anything

You might see that you have some level of eye surgery coverage on your existing policy.  Alternatively, you might find private health cover elsewhere that offers adequate eye care cover.  Don’t be too hasty in choosing to buy a policy –  double-check the terms first.  As previously stated, many private health insurance policies cover eye surgery coverage in certain limited circumstances.

Check the details of your required surgery against those of your existing or potential policy. It would be unfortunate to purchase a policy that mentions some eye surgery cover, only to find out that the specific procedure you need is excluded.  Also, when buying a new policy or switching private health funds, you may have a waiting period before you receive coverage for the procedure.

If you are unsure of your eye surgery coverage, check with your insurance representative.  You could also clear things with legal counsel, if you wish, to make sure everything is in order.  It could be worth it if you’re not confident to make these decisions alone.

Overall, comparing health insurance cover for any procedure you’re likely to need can be a good idea.  Also, don’t forget that there are other ways to save on health costs, too.
